Odyssey Tours to the Sacred Sites of Ancient Greece

Nor, indeed, has anyone explained the passion which binds the Philhellene to Greece. One might suppose it innate in certain temperaments. But the Philhellenes are not calculable; the travellers are diverse, only the spell under which they return is the same.
And the passion is ineradicable.

These are the words of Dilys Powell, writing about Humfry Payne’s passion for Greece in The Traveller’s Journey is Done. Humfry Payne was the director of the British School of Archaeology in Athens who excavated Perachora, the harbour sanctuary to Hera that sits at the tip of the peninsula opposite Corinth.

Payne was a young impassioned Philhellene who understood that those who cherished Greece were brought back by a spell that defied description.

For over 15 years Odyssey Tours to Ancient Greece has led many travellers back to the heartland of our classical roots and shared the excitement, stimulation and awesomeness of Greece’s bounty. We have journeyed from the majestic heights of Delphi to the sea-bound Sanctuary of the Great Gods at Samothraki and from the healing Asclepion at Kos to the awe-inspiring Oracle of the Dead at Ephyra.

We have walked on Mount Olympus, through the Centaurian forest, stepped on the sacred way at the Heraion of Samos and trekked from the Corcyian Cave to Delphi. We have imagined the mystery initiations at Eleusis, the young girls being trained by Artemis at Brauron and the healing dream incubations at Epidaurus.

Our journeys are unique in that each itinerary is different and we participate with the ethos of Greece not just observe it. Since pilgrimage is an archetypal process where travel and events in the outer world mirror our inner journey, our odyssey takes place on a number of levels simultaneously.

Each morning there is the opportunity to participate in a dream group which honours the inner process and stimulates a more soulful connection to our journey. Along the way we have seminars and group discussions on the richness of Greek myth, theatre, literature and religion led by Brian Clark and Peter O’Connor. Our journeys pass through the marvellous and surprising landscapes of Greece, a country of many dimensions and cultural riches. It is a land that takes you to its heart. Henry Miller in The Colossus of Maroussi described the experience of Greece this way:

Marvellous things happen to one in Greece – marvellous good things which can happen to one
nowhere else on earth
